What is a Dental Implant?

Simply put, dental implants are artificial tooth roots and replace natural tooth roots. Titanium ports are surgically implanted into the upper or lower jaws. Anesthesia is applied so as to limit the patient’s discomfort during the procedure but most patients just feel pressure from the tightening process. The bone and gums then heal around the implants to rigidly fixate them in place (at least a 3-6 month healing process). Flossophy uses high quality titanium implants that are scientifically engineered to work in any quality of bone to help ensure that implants can be placed with less grafting and in jaws with advanced bone loss (the AnyRidge dental implant system). Depending on each patient’s situation, this process can involve serval phases and treatment time can vary. After the posts fuse with your jaw and the gum swelling resolves, the dentist secures a crown, bridge, or denture to the implants to create a natural looking smile. With proper care and oral hygiene, a tooth implant can last a life time.

Complications of Dental Implants

Dental implants have several advantages including:

  • Pain, swelling, bruising, infection
  • Nerve damage
  • Sinus infection
  • Bone loss around the implant
  • Screw fractures and stripping
  • Restoration fractures

Modern approach to Dental Implants

At Flossophy Dental Boutique, we believe in providing our patients with the best possible care and limiting complications. That’s why we have invested in the latest, cutting-edge technology and techniques. We want you to have the confidence that we will build you your best smile with minimal risk.

3D CBCT machine

Our 3D CBCT machine is the latest on the market strictly for dental use. This innovative machine allows more enhanced detection of tooth fractures and infections then conventional 2D imaging. Our dental implant surgeons are able to provide our patients with semi-computer guided dental implants. This means boney structures are measured (no sinus or nerve damage) pre-surgery and the pre-determined implant sizes are placed digitally before the actual surgery even takes place. Accurate 3D planning can virtually (pun intended) eliminate the need for grafting in many cases. 3D digital work flow also avoids restorative errors because a virtual smile can be designed so the patient knows how the end product will look and screw access holes that connect the restoration to the implant will not be showing in the smile. 3D imaging is considered in the dental field the standard of care when placing dental implants.

Vegan bone grafts

Our dental implant surgeons are trained how to use blood products for vegan bone grafts. Often bone grafting is necessary, especially if you have not had a tooth in place for a while. Bone grafting involves supplementing and protecting the patient’s thin boney ridge with donated bone. Blood is drawn and separated in our unique dental centrifuge. Specific blood products stimulate bone grafts to heal faster and more predictably. Growth factors accelerate quality bone healing. White blood cells provide a natural antibiotic effect. Fibrin prevents movement of the graft material, the leading cause of graft failure, and provides a natural barrier. Traditional bone grafts use human or animal bone. Since many people have religious and philosophical restrictions, a vegan alternative is the only option for these patients.

3D Scanners and 3D printing

We have an in-house lab at Flossophy Dental Boutique that allows us to personally fabricate stents and smile mock-ups. The iTero scanner eliminates messy impressions and is a must when working with teeth that are loose already. 3D printing allows us to fabricate models from digitally designed smiles so patients can visualize their final smile before any surgery starts. The iTero also allows us to make duplicate digital dentures and restorations that can be delivered to the patient the same day of surgery.

ISQ magnetic resonance for implant integration

An ISQ indicator is used to determine the successful integration of the dental implant post with a touch-less wand. When patients have poor quality of bone, implants are torqued by hand to look for poor integration. If an implant is not quite healed, it will move and may failure due to this loading test. At Flossophy, we can ensure your dental implants will be secure without complications months after. The ISQ reading can scientifically determine when an implant can be loaded after placement – sometimes as little as 2 months.

The Single Dental Implant Procedure

The dental implant procedure involves several treatment phases and can last multiple months. Flossophy Dental Boutique prides itself in its personal approach to how we treat our clients, but in general the procedure usually involve three phases.

Phase One: Exam

During phase one, our dental implant specialists will decide if this procedure is right for you. We will have a thorough discussion of your health history and your treatment goals. We also perform a comprehensive examination of your gums and jawbone to determine if any additional procedures such as bone grafting or gum surgery is needed. If you and your doctor determine that this procedure is right for you, then we will proceed with scheduling you an appointment for the next phase in the process.

Phase Two: Placing the Dental Implant

Dental implant surgery is usually an out-patient procedure, meaning you can go home the same day as the surgery. Local anesthesia is applied alongside oral or conscious sedation. Our dental surgeons will then make a channel in the bone to place the implant. The implant is then placed and then one of two things can happen. Sometimes a cover is placed over the implant and the gums are stitched closed as the bone and gums fuse with the implant. We will then perform a second surgical incision when it is time to place the final crown or bridge. The other option is place a temporary abutment or crown on the implant at the time of the surgery. Healing may take several months as the implant is secured to the bone and the gums shrink.

Phase Three: Placing a Crown

After the implant has had time to fuse with the bone and gums, it is now time to apply the crown. Although this can vary from case to case it usually involves removing temporary restoration and taking digital impressions of your teeth. The impressions are used by our dental lab to fabricate the crown. The final restoration is delivered next appointment and can be used to eat the very same day.

The Overdenture Procedure

Overdentures are traditional dentures that snap on to dental implants. Snap on dentures is a more affordable option to meet your budget when replacing the whole mouth. Overdentures are made out of acrylic and can easily be repaired if broken or worn. The dentures can be removed by you or the dentist to clean around the implants making hygiene simple. The parts do wear done over time and usually require yearly maintenance. Overdentures are usually recommended for lower dentures that are loose. Two implants are placed in the lower front jaw. Usually no grafting is required. Patient only feels pressure, some soreness, and possible bruising. The dentures are soft relined to allow the implants to heal. Locator male buttons are placed to the implants and female housings are attached to the existing denture. Schedule a consultation and see how our experts can help improve your smile.

The All-On-X Dental Implant Procedure

Do you need a complete rework of your smile? Instead of replacing each tooth individually, our dental implant surgeons can place four or more implants on the top or bottom jaw as the main anchors. Our dentists will then attach a plastic bridge (or convert your existing denture to a bridge) to these dental implants the same day of surgery. The All-On-X procedure allows you to return back to normal, giving you a fixed option so you don’t have to take our dentures out at night. You will never have to remove teeth again. The plastic bridge is only a temporary so that we can test out the smile, allow the gums to shrink back to normal, and adjust the bite. After around 3 months of healing, a brand new zirconia bridge is fabricated after molds are taken. This is the closest to real teeth any one can get! Zirconia is twice as strong as teeth, brighter, and does not stain.
